Bega murder accused refused bail in Batemans Bay Court

A Bega man charged with the alleged murder of a 49-year-old man in Eden on April 4 has been refused bail in Batemans Bay Local Court.

Warren Anthony Scott, aged 36, appeared via audio-visual link before magistrate Mark Douglass on Monday, April 8.

He answered quietly "yes" when Mr Douglass asked if he could hear proceedings.

He again answered quietly "yes" when Mr Douglass asked if he understood the prosecution sought a saliva swab sample as part of forensic evidence.

The defence agreed to the sample being provided "by consent but without formal submissions".

Mr Douglass said he was satisfied the procedure was justified and in the public interest given the seriousness of the allegation.

Scott did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The case was adjourned to June 24, with a brief of evidence due to be served to the defence by June 10.

A psychiatric assessment has been requested.

No plea has yet been entered.
