Merimbula Big Game & Lakes Angling Club is gearing up for its inaugural Billfish Tournament to be held on March 22-24. This is a new venture by MBGLAC designed to be run in the best part of the game fish season and a large entry list is anticipated. Target fish are marlin as well as yellowfin tuna. Great ocean flathead are reported from off Bournda Island at 17 fathoms. Flathead are now well on the chew at the regular grounds. Tura Golf Course, Tura Headland, and north of Kianinny up to Bithry Inlet are good spots. Don’t forget the marks off the lookout in Quarantine Bay.
Good snapper remain at Hunter Reef, Haycock and Horseshoe Reef. Try soft plastics jigged up and down near the bottom. Try also Lennards Island and North Head. Congratulations to member Les Tudberry for his first ever gummy shark (flake) and a beauty it is, see photo. Big gummy shark are schooling south of Haycock beside the Horseshoe Reef. Whiting remain off Main Beach, Merimbula opposite Fishpen. Best results from beach worms. Beach salmon are sporadic; best spots Aslings and Haycock Beaches.
At the headlands as well as the wharf areas at both Tathra and Merimbula “rat” kingfish (undersized below 65cm length), salmon and tailor are moving around. Good calamari squid are being landed at the wharfs depending on prevailing wind direction. Luderick remain on the chew at Merimbula, morning and evening, try using plastic lures.
There are trevally, bream and luderick about the oyster racks in Merimbula Lake. Dusky flathead, flounder, bream, trevally, mullet and some garfish are available in the Merimbula channel. Some good bream are reported from the main lake and there are schooling tailor available.
Estuary fish are relatively slow breeders so take what you need to eat and release the rest. Good tailor, trevally and mullet are prolific at Pambula Lake. Dusky flathead, big bream and whiting are all available at Mogareeka in the Bega River.
The clubhouse in Spencer Park will be open from 6.30pm on Friday, March 1. Visitors are very welcome. Come and enjoy the fishing report, the ambience, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices. Darragh Reynolds is the scheduled host.
