The Department of Health issued the sanction last week as several other Bupa facilities around the country were singled out for failings, including at Griffith, Traralgon (Vic) and Calwell (ACT).
As such, Bupa Eden has had its Commonwealth funding revoked for a period of six months and can not take on any new care recipients during that time.
It must also appoint an advisor to help it meet its clinical responsibilities and provide additional training to staff.
In its findings published on December 7, the department identified “critical deficiencies at the service contributing to serious and detrimental failings in several areas”.
These areas included failings in staff management and information systems, clinical care, medication management and behaviour management.
According to the report, the nursing home did not meet 21 of 44 expected outcomes across several accreditation standards.
A residents and relatives meeting was held on Tuesday, December 18, while an advisor and administrator were appointed on December 13.
While the wording of the sanction is strong, it’s understood the quality of resident care at Bupa Eden has the support of families and assessors, but that significant errors have been made in system and staffing areas.
A spokesperson for Bupa has apologised “unreservedly” following the department’s sanctions
“Bupa unreservedly apologises to our Bupa Eden residents and their families and is committed to resolving issues identified at our Eden home. These issues are unacceptable,” the spokesperson said.
“We are working with the Department of Health to address the issues detailed in their report, and we are keeping residents and their families informed as we progress.
“We encourage any residents or family members with concerns to contact us on 1800 804 888, email bupaagedcarefeedback@bupa.com.au or Bupa Australia’s Speak Up Hotline 1800 479 241.”
The Health Department and Australian Aged Care Quality Agency are continuing to monitor the service.
