Merimbula Tourism manager Chris Nicholls said the planning of this NYE event has involved greater input from the community and is looking to be the best one yet.
“We have worked closely with the stakeholders in the planning process, which has included emergency services and many other members of the community who have helped build and plan the event the whole way through.
“What we found was that the greatest value to the community was to make the event more about families,” he said.

The event will once again take place at Ford Park, Merimbula. Mr Nicholls said this year’s NYE event is different because it caters for the whole Bega Valley Shire.
“The aim is a family festival, valuable for tourists and visitors to our region, as well as wonderful for our entire Bega Valley Shire community,” Mr Nicholls said.
The all day market stalls and food vendors are an exciting new touch to this year’s event, Mr Nicholls hopes to see people travel from all parts of the Bega Valley to join in and experience the atmosphere.
“The whole thing is built around the 9.30pm fireworks – families can really take advantage of that,” he suggests, “it will encourage families to attend and stay for the whole festival.”
“People should bring chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy the wonderful music, food, and markets, festive atmosphere, and of course the amazing fireworks,” he said.
The festival commences at 10am and the family orientated concert kicks off at 5.30pm, with a lineup of local acts headlined by The Figmentz. The main fireworks display will fill the sky at 9.30pm with gates closing shortly after at 9.45pm to allow volunteers to do the big cleanup.
“We hope people will understand the quick clear-out as this will allow us to provide for following years events for more fireworks and acts for the spectacular, and to ensure ongoing sustainability for the event,” Mr Nicholls said.
As for both the young and old who will be looking for nightlife afterwards, Mr Nicholls said plenty of clubs, pubs and dining venues in the area are hosting events into the evening.
“People who want to go on and live it up and see through the new year can go on to other venues which are holding events, such as the golf club which has an event starting around 10.30pm,” he said.
Also, don’t miss the special five-minute high altitude fireworks display viewable from surrounding areas at 12am. This year there’s an entry fee of $5 per person for the concert event, accompanied children under 12 free.
