The extensive marketing and education campaign leading up to the October 29 start of the shire’s Food Organics, Garden Organics collection has paid dividends, with only a one per cent contamination rate being applauded by the BVSC waste and recycling team.
“This is about the best outcome we could hope for. Some councils have up to 80 per cent contamination when they start a FOGO service,” FOGO coordinator Joley Vidau posted on Facebook.
“Just goes to show how totally amazing this community is.”
Some areas of concern remain, including families that use nappies complaining about the new fortnightly collections of red bins, and a high contamination rate of green FOGO bins in Eden.
“Safe to say it could be much better,” Ms Vidau said of Eden’s effort last week.
“We have imagery of the contents of every bin as it is picked up, so we know who's contaminating.
“We will give everyone the benefit of the doubt for the first few weeks but after that we will need to take action.”
More information on which bin to use and when to put each colour out for collection can be found on the council’s waste app, dedicated Facebook page or by calling 6499 2222.
