Elaine Heath is the chair of Far South Legacy and a member of the Merimbula RSL sub-Branch and so it’s not surprising that she came up with the idea of celebrating the 100 years since the armistice at the end of WWI with a dinner dance.

Organised by Far South Coast Legacy and the Merimbula RSL sub-branch, it will also be a fundraiser for Legacy which looks after 106 local war widows with outings, lunches and maintenance around their homes.
The organisation receives no government funding and relies on raising its own funds for the war widows.
It has been two years in the making but now the countdown is on to the dinner dance on Saturday, November 10.
Remembrance Day, November 11 commemorates the Armistice of Compiègne between the Allies and Germany which came into effect at 11am on 11 November 1918. After more than four years of bloodshed and destruction, the guns fell silent on the Western Front and the war was finally over.
Ms Heath decided it would be a good opportunity to hold an event to mark the 100 years since the armistice too effect and said it was particularly fitting for Legacy and the sub-Branch to be involved.
“This is a nice way of getting some funding for our war widows, knowing the money will stay here. We have one widow who has just turned 99 but we have also started getting Vietnam Veterans widows now,” Ms Heath said.
Ms Heath decided to use the Sapphire Coast Jazz Band and encourage those attending to dress in Roaring 20s outfits, after discussing the evening with band leader Paul Dion.
“Roaring 20s dress is optional but there will be a prize for the best dressed. We will have one set of music from the 20s, then some jazz and swing from the WWII era and then progress musically through time,” she said.

“There will also be a big selection of raffle prizes. Local businesses and artists have been so generous. One legatee has provided a hand-sewn quilt, I’m really pleased, we have 16 prizes,” Ms Heath said.
The dinner dance is on Saturday, November 10 at the Merimbula RSL Club, 6.30pm for 7pm. Cost is $55 a head for a two course meal and music.
Tickets are available from the Merimbula RSL foyer, phone 6495 1502.
