This weekend, Club Sapphire will launch its new junior bowls academy with registrations being taken between 9am and 12pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14 .
“It is a good social and low impact sport which anyone can play,” bowls development officer Michael Wilks said.
Lawn bowls tends to hold an “old person image”, although has progressed to “become a young person’s game that older people can play as well”, Wilks said.
“The Australian bowls team over the past decade has been younger than the Australian cricket team. Even at the Australian bowls championships we hosted last year the woman who won was 20 years old.”
Bowls is an all inclusive sport where any age group can play, the academy is aimed at providing school aged children the opportunity to have a go. The sport of bowls continues to become a popular activity with younger generations on the back of some great exposure through live broadcasts and an increase in the popularity of barefoot bowls.
The game is an iconic part of the national fabric with a significant increase in families and friends enjoy the great social aspects the sport of bowls offers. There are also increased opportunities being provided to junior bowlers with state and national titles contested annually along with several junior tournaments where prize money is on offer.
The Club Sapphire Bowls Academy will service the Sapphire Coast and Bega Valley communities. Membership is $10 annually and includes the use of the club’s facilities and equipment, a complimentary drink bottle, an academy shirt and cap after the first two months attendance, weekly giveaways and vouchers.
Clinics will be conducted by a hand picked coaching committee on afternoons during the school week and Sunday mornings to ensure that all academy members are being provided with the best opportunities to enjoy the benefits.
