“With our range, it’s purely timber. That’s all we ever do” says Tony Barilaro, director of Ryleho Group.
“Our our timber range is very much attracted to the country style cottage, country style dwellings that have those double sash windows, for example the ones with horns on them.”
Ryleho have various styles “and we can make heritage designs.”
In the country a lot of people tend to have timber windows and doors, for many reasons.
“One is they have excellent thermal properties in them. In conjunction with that double glazing solution, you end up having amazing insulation in winter and summer.
“We do cater for all timber styles. We can do those Colonial windows, we can do those heritage double-hung style windows with horns on it, we can match existing profiles. There are a lot of places around the country that have timber windows,” and they may have a significant feature in it.
“We use three types of timber.” Tony says this helps with the big temperature fluctuations we get in this part of the world.
In winter, “in Canberra and surrounds for example, it can be -6degC and 12degC in the one day. That’s a huge adjustment in terms of movement and shrinkage in the home. The beauty of using timber, it actually provides that robust material which moves with the house. It’s a very flexible, very durable material.”

The specific three timbers that Tony says they have found through 30 years of experience to be the best options in our region, are cedar, Victorian Ash and rosewood.
“Cedar is our number one seller” because of its versatility and durability. It also has the best thermal properties in it.
For bushfire prone areas, you would go for the Victorian Ash. “It’s an approved fire retardant timber” which matters when you’re seeking building approval. “You can still have a timber window solution, but one that is acceptable in fire prone areas.”
The other one is rosewood. This is a high-end product to gives you that reddish colour. “It really does polish up very nicely.” These are popular for parts of the house where timber is to be used as a feature.
Tony says the same thing applies to their doors as well. They do custom doors in the same three timbers and people also like to incorporate them into the overall style of the home.
“In some country homes the door is the standout feature of the house.”
