First on the starting grid is a men’s health “pit stop” at this coming weekend’s Pambula Motorfest.
Fifteen local GPs coordinated by Dr Jaclyn Brown will be conducting free health checks for men between 10am and 2pm at the Motorfest being held at the Pambula Sporting Complex on Sunday, September 30.
The health “mechanics” will be paying particular attention to your chassis (diabetes, waist circumference), fuel additives (alcohol consumption), oil (blood) pressure, spark plugs (testicles), extractor (colorectal cancer), headlights (eyes) and your grill (teeth).
Men going through the pit stop health check will be issued with a roadworthy certificate, or a potential defect notice requiring further attention from their respective doctor.
Also as part of the pit stop will be free soup and the chance to win a double pass to the Bathurst 1000.
Meanwhile, a community health forum will be held next month at Wolumla as part of Bega Valley Mental Health Month activities.
Health advocates will be in attendance, including Headspace and Bega Valley Suicide Action Prevention Network (SPAN).
Guest speakers will include Dr Duncan McKinnon, Lifeline CEO Bob Gilkes and Glenn Cotter from R U OK?
The forum will be held on Wednesday, October 3, at Wolumla Hall, from 4.30-6pm, with light refreshments available.
Other Mental Health Month events include an Aboriginal mental health first aid training at the Eden Log Cabin on October 4-5, and adult mental health training course at the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club on October 8-9.
Both events run from 9am until 5pm each day and are free to attend. It’s understood the Tathra event is already full, but contact Kath Miller on km039903@gmail.com for details. To register for the Eden course, contact Liz Scott on lscott@gph.org.au.
Then on October 20 will be the annual Remembrance Walk, this year to be held at Panboola Wetlands in Pambula from 11am. RSVP to begaspan@gmail.com.
