The Killer Whales will face season-long rivals in the Wolumla Tigresses for the premiership on Sunday.
“It’s great that the top two teams of the season have made it through,” co-coach Debbie Heron said on Wednesday, adding that her team was primed and ready for the challenge.
“We’re really looking forward to a tough match against Wolumla.”
The Killer Whales finished as the minor premiers with a near flawless score sheet, the only mark being a 3-3 tie with the Tigresses in round two.
Their next, and only other encounter in the regular season favoured the Eden roster 3-2.
However, the Killer Whales won the major semi-final 3-1 and the Eden roster will start as favourites by most accounts with the team extremely fit and well-drilled.
“Our preparation has been great, we’ve had some fun indoor training sessions over the last few weeks as well as our usual training runs,” Heron said.
“The week off has come at the perfect time, a couple of the girls have had some niggling injuries and they’ve had time to get those right so we are fully fit and raring to go.”
Heron herself helps form a backbone for the team out of the middle, while young gun Talia Westley provides a link to the strikers up front in Kamilla Grubesic and Amber Seckold.
Utilising a triangles technique with players at three angles has sparked a dominance in attack for the Eden club.
The Tigresses will be hopeful of an improved defensive effort with the anticipated return of back Tegan Grant, while Caitlin Johnson calls the shots from sweeper with sister and captain-coach Kirsty McPaul running things from the middle.
“We’ll take nothing for granted come Sunday,” Heron said. “We know we’ll have to improve from our last match-up in the major semi-final, but we are definitely up for the challenge.”
At their best, the two teams stand head and shoulders above the competition trading blows in attacking and defensive stats this season.
Eden landed 74 goals compared to Wolumla’s 71 and to put those figures in perspective – third placed Pambula kicked 29, while fourth on the ladder Merimbula bagged just 15.
Eden’s scoring could have been even higher, but faced a couple of forfeits this season.
Wolumla holds a narrow edge defensively, conceding just seven goals to Eden’s eight so fans can expect one thriller of a showdown.
The 2018 Far South Coast Football Association grand final will be held at Merimbula’s Berrambool Oval on Sunday.
The women’s encounter kicks off at 12.50pm.
Reserves at 11.10am and first grade at 2.30pm.
