Human-powered explorer Grant ‘Axe’ Rawlinson’s mission to row 3000 kilometres across the Tasman Sea has been cut short after he required rescuing 250km south-east of Eden on Sunday morning.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokesman (AMSA) Dan Glover said Mr Rawlinson contacted AMSA via satellite phone and then activated his distress beacon around 7.30am Sunday, September 2. He said Mr Rawlinson was uninjured but felt “he could not continue on with the rough sea conditions”.
It is believed he may have had a broken oar.
The adventurer was winched to safety by a Toll Search and Rescue helicopter from Canberra. An AMSA Challenger jet from Melbourne supported the rescue providing “top cover”.
Mr Rawlinson has returned to his home in Singapore and said he is “safe and well”.
