The Giiyong Festival is set to take place at Jigamy on Saturday, September 22, and will be a celebration of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal culture.
Giiyong Festival will be the first event of its type held within the Yuin Nation. Giiyong (pronounced Guy-Yoong) means 'come to welcome' in the South Coast language as spoken by the elders.
Festival organisers Twofold Aboriginal Corporation, Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council and South East Arts are currently seeking volunteers to lend a hand on the day.
“The Festival runs for 12 hours, so there are a lot jobs we need help with,” festival coordinator Jasmin Williams said.
“Volunteers are required to give up just four hours of their time. There is a job for everyone, as long as you are over 18.”
The Giiyong Festival will celebrate traditional and contemporary Aboriginal culture and feature music, art, dance, workshops and demonstrations, food, film, art exhibitions, market stalls and more.
“The festival is a great way to get to know and learn about the local Aboriginal community,” Ms Williams said.
More information about volunteering is available from the Giiyong Festival website www.giiyong.com.au. Entry to Giiyong Festival is free, donations are being gratefully accepted.
