Rachel, from Mallacoota, started with the Magnet this week and is keen to get to know more about the Eden and surrounding community, telling their stories.
She brings with her a wealth of experience in freelance photojournalism and creating stories with a community focus.
She has spent the past three years documenting the characters and stories of East Gippsland and is now keen to spread her gaze north of the border as well.
Her portfolio includes having her work in highly regarded publications, online as well as in print, throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.
As well as freelance photojournalism, Rachel has also worked as a qualified primary and preschool teacher, had roles as a community theatre director and homeless soup kitchen coordinator...and was once an Aussie outback road surveyor!
“I am really keen to share my passion for community based stories with the Eden community,” Rachel said.
“I have already become acquainted with some locals, including fishermen and footballers, and I am looking forward to getting to know more and sharing their stories.”
Magnet editor Ben Smyth said having Rachel join the team as a full-time journalist based in Eden was a real plus for the region.
“Rachel has hit the ground running this week, bringing her keen sense for a great story and eye for a wonderful photo to the team in only her first days on the job,” Mr Smyth said.
“I’m sure the community of Eden will make her feel very welcome. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourselves and share your stories when you see her around town.”
