It’s that time of year a Scottish flavour seasons the air.
A band of 30 pipers and drummers plus four Highland dancers will spread their Scottish spirit at the Merimbula RSL on Saturday, July 7.
For their fourth year in a row, The Canberra Burns Club Pipe Band are excited to visit Merimbula.
The group consists of a talented mix of men and women both young and old.
“The band is a real mixture of ages I think our youngest member is 13 or 14 and our oldest is 70,” Pipe major Athol Chalmers said.
“Some have played the bag pipes for many years as it is a part of their family, others have just heard it and wanted to learn.”
Establishing in 1937, The Canberra Burns Club Pipe Band is one of the oldest bands in Australia.
“It has been a successful band too, we have been very active in competitions and concerts both nationally and internationally,” Mr Chalmers said.
The band is looking forward to their visit, playing in a relaxed environment away from competitive stage lights.
“The band always looks forward to coming down to Merimbula,” Mr Chalmers said.
“Band members also play multiple instruments like electric guitar, drum kit, harp and whistles – which is good for them to pick up and play at concerts like this one.”
The concert has been a huge success in the past, packing out part of the club.
“The concert has gone very well down there, with the demographic being older and quite a few with a Scottish heritage really fill out the room.
“It always attracts a good audience,” Mr Chalmers said.
The Sounds of Scotland concert will feature a mix of Scotland's favorite tunes and modern classics over a duration of 2.5 hours including intermission.
So, don’t be a numpty and miss out on this years Scottish treat. Sit down on your bahoochie and set yourself up for an evening of musical magic.
Tickets are available from the club’s reception or phone 6495 1502. Adults $15, concessions $10 and children (under 16) $5.
