The forum will run on June 23-24 with a focus on the question ‘how blue are our oceans?’.
According to the centre’s manager, Kerryn Wood, some of the speakers are too good to miss.
“We’re really excited to be welcoming back CEO of Tangaroa Blue, Heidi Taylor, who spoke to us two years ago and will be updating us with new research on marine debris cleanup,” Ms Wood said.
“Heidi has been really involved in the roll out of the state government’s Return and Earn program, and has provided them with a lot of the cleanup data for it.
“Another really exciting speaker we have coming is Jimmy White, a young guy who has traveled the world as a nature photographer and film maker.
“He contributed footage to David Attenborough’s latest Blue Planet series, and will be talking to us about his experiences on passenger vessels around the Antarctic.
“We also have a free and open ‘Source Reduction Plan Workshop” from 2pm on Saturday, exploring ways we can create plastic reduction programs for the South Coast.”
There will also be a number of local names speaking over the course of the forum, particularly at a Q&A panel on Sunday afternoon.
The panel will include Doug Reckord from Bournda Environmental Education Centre, Karen Joynes from No Balloons Release Australia, Toby Browne from Bega Valley Shire Council’s waste management services, and Vanessa Milton, editor of the film ‘Blue’.
The event will conclude on Sunday with a presentation by local photographer Peter Hannan.
“Peter is a wonderful photographer; he actually met Jimmy White on a trip to Antarctica recently and has paid for his entire travel and accommodation costs, so we’re really grateful for that,” Ms Wood said.
“We’ve still got a few tickets left, so anyone interested can either call us on 6496 1699, or purchase them through the centre’s website.”
The Marine Science Forum will begin from 8.30am Saturday, June 23 and continue from 9am on Sunday, June 24 at Club Sapphire, Merimbula.
