One of the Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club’s biggest competitions of the year, officials said yellowfin were widely active during the contest, including one boat involved in a four-way hookup. 

Two southern bluefin tuna were landed, one tagged and released and a larger fish lost. 

Nearby vessel “Seamode” also hooked up, congratulations to Ross Cooper for his 49.5Kg bluefin. 

There was lots of action for the juniors with good albacore and striped tuna providing lots of excitement. 

The big game anglers reported a large number of whales frolicking their way northwards towards their breeding ground in Queensland waters, but they were well offshore.

Prizes went up for grabs across 16 categories over the weekend, including capture, tag and release and most meritorious as well as junior and ladies divisions. 

In regular fishing news, good ocean flathead remain on the chew southeast of Turingal Point, try 16 fathoms and the usual spots off Bithrys, Bournda Island and Tura Headland. 

Reports that there are a lot of smaller fish about so anglers need to make sure their catch meets DPI requirements. 

With ideal weather conditions over the long weekend visiting and local anglers have benefited from morwong and snapper off the reefs such as Long Point and Haycock.  Early morning and evening are the ideal times. Fresh squid bait is a great snapper attractor.  Active reef areas include White Rock out from Kianinny, Horeshoe, Lennards Island, North Head, Boyds Tower and Mowarry. 

Good salmon are now reported from north Tura Beach as well as Haycock Beach try spinning with a 50gm metal lure.  Salmon are also reported from Aslings Beach at Eden. 

The estuaries are cooling and estuary fish seem to be quieting down.  Dusky flathead as well as trevally, tailor & bream can be taken but patience is needed.  With the Bega River closed Mogareeka is the best place to try as fish congregate closer to the salt water.

The club is open every Friday evening from 6.30pm.
