2pm: The man has been airlifted to Concord Burns Unit in “an extremely critical condition” a Southern NSW Local Health District spokeswoman said.
Initially taken to South East Regional Hospital near Bega, the 64-year-old man was at first unable to be identified due to his injuries, reportedly “some of the worst they’ve seen” in SERH emergency.
EARLIER:
Investigations are underway after a man sustained serious burns at the Eden Gardens Country Club Golf Course on Friday morning, May 25.
Earlier reports to authorities of an explosion were downplayed by witnesses, who instead said a man had caught fire in circumstances now being investigated.
The man was believed to have allegedly created multiple ignition points on the ground of the fairway.
“What appears to be the case is that in the process of lighting that fire is that he has caught on fire,” CEO of the Eden Golf Course Andrew Terry said.
Eden Golf Club staff quickly responded to smoke on the fairway, calling Triple-Zero (000).
Emergency services arrived within five minutes to a man who was reportedly semi-conscious in the creek with burns to a large percentage of his body.
Paramedics and Fire and Rescue NSW personnel assisted at the scene, transporting the patient by ambulance to the South East Regional Hospital.
“We aren’t sure what his condition is, but we suspect it is grave,” Mr Terry said.
“There is no evidence of any other party involved and how he got there we don’t know.”
Part of the golf course has been closed for play as a crime scene has been declared.
The man remains unidentifiable and investigations will be ongoing.
