Eighty-four-year-old volunteer Keith Williamson is an outpatient at the hospital, and lends his time to weekly physiotherapy balance and falls prevention classes.
“People who recover from operations need physiotherapy, and also after they’ve been discharged they can become involved to help their recovery,” Mr Williamson said.
Along with other outpatients, Mr Williamson said after leaving hospital they felt their was a need for them to help the hospital where they could.
“We thought their was a need for us to do it,” he said.
Since becoming a volunteer 18 months ago, Mr Williamson said he has enjoyed “getting out of the house and meeting new people”.
“Every area and ward of the hospital has volunteers,” he said.
Mr Williamson is one of over six million Australians who volunteer their time for a cause, and this year’s theme is “Give a little. Change a lot”.
SERH is always on the lookout for more volunteers, with roles across every department.
