Both men have been caring for Eden’s flag mast and changing its flags since it was hoisted aloft as part of a large community project in 1993.
Mr Dickenson and Mr Whiter, used the occasion of the mast’s 25th birthday to call for a new generation of flag monitors to step forward and take on the task.
“This job has given me immense satisfaction, but I am not going to be here in another 25 years. We need someone else to take over the role,” Mr Dickenson said.
Mr Whiter echoed Mr Dickenson’s sentiments but noted that many community organisations need a new generation of volunteers to ensure their survival.
“We are searching for young blood to take over the role,” Mr Whiter said. “ We need young blood in a lot of organisations in town.”
Museum curator Jodie White said the flag mast project was demonstrative of Eden’s community spirit, a spirit that she hopes will inspire people to volunteer for the role.
“Whenever there is a cause the community is passionate about, whenever someone is in need, the Eden community comes together to do what they can.
“Hopefully there are people reading this that will help our museum volunteers continue the wonderful job they’ve done in maintaining the flagpole so that it remains a proud and colourful sight every day for everyone who passes by,” Ms White said.
If you would like to volunteer for the role of flag monitor you can contact Jack Dickenson on 0407 963 036 or the Eden Killer Whale Museum on (02) 6496 2094.
