The Eden Library homework club started in October 2016 in partnership with the Eden Access Centre and provides one hour of tutoring and assistance to local high school and primary school children every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon between 3:30 and 4:30 pm.
The initiative was designed to support children and their teachers by providing friendly and practical assistance with homework assignments as well as reading and writing help.
“The focus is on providing flexible, personalised, fun and inclusive learning in a relaxed environment,” program librarian Linda Albertson said.
The club is currently run by two dedicated volunteers who give their valuable time to supervise and tutor the children.
“Our club is staffed by two passionate volunteers, but we need more to meet current community demand,” Ms Albertson said.
The library caters to between six and nine school children who regularly attend the club to gain help and support but also to socialise with old and new friends.
“The homework club is a meeting place where you can meet up with my friends while doing your homework,” Eden Public School pupil Patrick said. “Afterwards you can jump on the computers or read a book.”
“It is a peaceful and quiet environment to get your homework done,” Eden Marine High School student Hannah said.
Eden Public School student Jenna said that she loves to be able to do her homework surrounded by books.
“I love all the books and DVD’s,” she said.
The library is seeking volunteers who are available to help out Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Teaching experience is desirable but not required.
“Volunteer tutors must satisfy a Working With Children Check and they may have teaching qualifications or previous tutoring experience, but this is not a prerequisite,” Ms Albertson said.
Patrick encouraged prospective volunteers to give it a try.
“Just come along,” he said. “Home work club is an environment of respect and working together, and without volunteers, it wouldn’t work.”
