This is one step in a journey that Matari hopes will bring him closer to his dreams of being an Olympic athlete and representing his country, and home town.  

The 14-year-old Eden Marine High student was selected to participant in the tour that is run annually through Sports Travel Australia. 

The principal of Sports travel Australia, Keith Murphy said that athletes are selected based on high standards at the state level.  

For the last two years Matari has competed at zone, regional and state in both the 100m and 200m sprint events.

Matari has proven to be quick off the mark with personal best times of 12.22 seconds for the 100m sprint and 25.98 seconds for the 200m sprint. 

Matari’s grandmother, Lorraine Cunning said that he had little interest in sport in primary school, but after being encouraged to join the Eden Tigers Rugby league side in 2016 his sprinting abilities and speed became apparent.

“He was asked to play because they (Eden Tigers) were short on players,” she said. “We didn’t realise how fast he was until he got on the field,” Ms Cunning said.

Matari is a passionate and determined athlete who is working hard every day to reach his sporting goals. 

“He trains at home in the gym, swims, sprints and trains and plays rugby league,” Ms Cunning said. “He also does a lot of research on top sprinters, studying their methods for training and racing, their diets and their story.”

Mr Murphy said that this tour is an invaluable experience for young athletes who hope to compete at an international level. 

“They get a taste of international competition and get to travel internationally,” he said. “it is hugely beneficial for young,up and coming athletes.” 

The aspiring young athlete is seeking financial support and sponsorship and has approached local businesses. He is also trying to source a local coach who can help him to achieve his best.
