Three Melbourne men are following in the footsteps of Australia’s first Saint, Mary MacKillop, on a pilgrimage that will lead them to Eden.
Walkers David Schutz and Sean Deany, accompanied by backup driver Paul Coghlan, left Orbost this week on the trek that will take them through Delegate, Bombala, Cathcart, Towamba and on to Eden.
They will arrive at Mary MacKillop Hall in Calle Calle Street on Wednesday, April 26.
“We are trying to promote the hall as a place of pilgrimage because of Mother Mary’s connection to it and to the town and community of Eden,” Mary MacKillop Hall management committee chairman Mike Sheppard said.
Mary MacKillop visited Eden in 1899 and 1901. Mary’s mother, Flora, was one of 76 people on the steamer, Ly-ee-Moon, to drown on May 30, 1886. Her body was taken to Eden.
Mary was appreciative of the care and love shown to her mother by the Eden people and decided to send Sisters to establish a school in Eden.
