Club president Geoff McMahon said it was a “wait and see” scenario when it came to the final number of entrants.

“We’re up to around 40 entrants at this stage, but game fishing can be a bit fickle with numbers,” he said.

Mr McMahon said the forecast for the three-day tournament was “rubbish”.

“It’s not fantastic,” he said.

“Generally the biggest day is the first day and it’s looking fishable on Saturday and Sunday, but it could be fairly uncomfortable come Monday.”

The forecast comes after a low off the NSW east coast caused unfavourable conditions for the Eden Amateur Fishing Club’s family fishing competition last week.

Mr McMahon said he was expecting southerly winds at 15 to 20 knots on Saturday and northerly winds at 15 to 20 knots on Sunday, increasing to 20 to 25 knots on Monday.

The conditions will not not stop the president from chasing marlin, tuna or shark and expects keen anglers to join him from Bermagui and Victoria.

The Eden Open Tournament boasts more than $10,000 worth of prizes and give aways, as well as the highly sought-after highest point scoring team trophy.

The club supports the NSW Department of Primary Industries tag and release (T&R) program, with more than half of the club and tournament prizes being awarded based on points for T&R fish.

Registration will be held at the Eden Garden Country Club on Friday, March 17, from 6pm to 7.30pm before the tournament briefing.

Presentations will be held at the country club on Sunday, March 19, from 5.30pm.
