When the Eden Magnet went to press last week it was reported that nothing further had been found after the initial discovery in late June, and rebuilding of the beach-wall was scheduled to resume. 

But on Monday, Aboriginal elder Uncle Ossie Cruse advised that in the intervening days, more human remains had been discovered. 

“Two site officers from the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council (ELALC) have continued digging, and discovered the rest of the body,” Uncle Ossie said. 

“Anthropologists confirmed the bones are from a middle-aged male, who was suffering arthritis. 

"We’ve recovered all of his body, except for the tiny bones of his hands and feet,” he said.

Uncle Ossie speculated that the whole area was a potential burial ground, and said that any further earth moving on the site would involve ELALC site officers. 

In the meantime, agreement has been reached with the developers to finish the renovations of the beachwall, with no more deep digging planned.

“On behalf of the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council elders I’d like to express my appreciation of the caravan park owners, who stopped their work so we could retrieve these ancestral remains,” Uncle Ossie said.

“We are now able to return the body to his final resting place, with dignity and respect.”
