Speaking after the result was announced last Wednesday, Dr Nockles said the result was a “tremendous demonstration of democracy and social cohesion”.
“Eden-Monaro has returned one of the highest participation rates in the country,” Dr Nockles said.
Mr Catchlove said the 64.9 per cent ‘yes’ response in Eden-Monaro reflected “the maturity and inclusiveness of Australians”.
“Despite the great overall result, we shouldn’t forget the people who chose ‘no’,” Mr Catchlove said. “While Section 116 of the Constitution protects religious freedoms, our MPs must ensure that those freedoms aren’t eroded through the same-sex marriage legislation while making sure we don’t entrench discrimination.”
