It seems only fitting that a garden created with a nautical theme – complete with anchors, portholes, bollards, steering wheels and even a ship’s capstan – will be open for display during the 2017 Eden Whale Festival.

Ron and Julie Lambourn’s garden in Weecoon Street, Eden, is one of six gardens in the Eden and District Open Gardens Festival that will be open to the public on the weekend of October 28-29, between 10am and 4pm.
The Lambourn’s garden features 70 cycads, 50 grass trees, palms, yakkas, dragon trees and rock orchids, as well as waterfalls, all with sweeping views over the ocean, Ross Bay and the wharf.
Mr Lambourn established the garden from scratch after he bought the property in the late 1980s and over the years has spent “thousands of hours” turning his vision into a reality.
What started out as a steep, scrubby block with nothing but tea trees, is now elegantly terraced with stone walls and staircases, interspersed with manicured lawns, and recently completed and extensive timber decks.
The nautical treasures have come from far and wide; some acquired through word-of-mouth and others on ebay. The ship’s capstan originated in Port Kembla and there are remnants of the tuna boats that once supplied Eden’s cannery.
The Eden Lioness Club has been holding the open garden event for more than 20 years and now runs it in conjunction with the Eden Whale Festival. It is a major fundraiser for the club.
Tickets, which cost $10 and give access to six gardens, are available from the Lioness stall outside the Eden Newsagency and at the newsagency in the lead-up to the event.
Tickets will also be available from the Lioness’ purple tent outside the Scout Hall on the weekend of the event, as well as from participating gardens.
