Garry was a non-stop footballer who always gave his all - and then some - as a superb scrummager (back in the days when scrums were scrums in an intense battle for possession), a strong runner in open play and a tireless, punishing defender.
Not only was Garry a legendary footballer, he was an outstanding person off the field and fun to be around.
Garry arrived in Eden from Dubbo where he worked in the county council, pursuing his career in local government administration and worked in the office of the then Imlay Shire Council, which later became part of Bega Valley Shire Council amalgamation.
He played hooker for the Eden Tigers from 1968-71, then Queanbeyan Kangaroos 1972-77 and Harden-Murrumburrah until 1980 when he retired from football to complete his local government studies, rising to become general manager of city councils at Hobart, Darwin and Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
In rugby league he represented every group and division in which he played including against international touring opposition.
More recently among his achievements, Garry was named in the Eden Tigers 1946-1996 Legends Team.
While in Eden, Garry married local girl Gillian Cameron in 1969.
Late last month (August 26) after a long illness, Garry passed away on the Sunshine Coast. He was 69.
Although residing in enemy Maroon territory, Garry remained a true blue NSW Blue always.
A funeral service for Garry was held at Caloundra on September 1.
The Eden Tigers have a long, proud history in Group 16 Rugby League and Garry will always be an important part of the club's fabric.
Eden Tigers extend sincere condolences to Gill, daughters Jane, Megan, Gai and their families.
