Organised by the local food rescue team from OzHarvest Sapphire Coast, the Think.Eat.Save event will see hundreds of people descend on Eden Public School to learn about reducing the impact of food waste.
“An incredible four million tonnes of food is wasted in Australia every year and we effectively throw one in five bags of groceries in the bin due to the amount of food we waste,” OzHarvest Sapphire Coast co-founder Christine Welsh said.
“Change starts at home by rescuing forgotten fridge food and changing simple food habits.”
This is the third annual Think.Eat.Save event Ms Welsh has run in the local area but the first one in the Eden township.
This year’s theme is Every Home A Farm.
“It is focussing on how we can use our spaces - home gardens, window sills, lawns, etc to grow fruit and vegetable, make our own compost, and be self-sustaining, or even as little as growing your own herbs - every little bit helps reduce food waste,” Ms Welsh said.
To make the event that much more special, not only are guests being treated to a free meal but they will also hear from Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia as well as permaculture teacher Dan Bakker and founding editor of PIP Permaculture Magazine Robyn Rosenfeldt.
OzHarvest Sapphire Coast is hosting its Think.Eat.Save event Saturday, August 5 at the Eden Public School. The event will run from 10:30am to 2:30pm. At 10.30am Costa and Dan will be creating a garden bed at the school and talking people through how it’s done. Lunch will be served between 11:30am to 12:30pm.
This will be followed by a panel discussion from 1pm to 2:30pm where Costa, Dan and Robyn will speak about the importance of not wasting food, about growing your own and about what individuals we can do to save the planet and enjoy a healthy, sustainable life. People are welcome to come just for the panel discussion.
While this is a free event, OzHarvest Sapphire Coast will accept donations which will go towards hosting similar events in the future and continuing its work providing food for those in need in the local community.
Ms Welsh said they have almost reached capacity, but people are still able to book and go on a waitlist as more may be released. to book go to www.eventbrite.com.au/e/thinkeatsave-2017-tickets-35530930971.
