The pair was reunited with their boat, Val, last month after Eden Water Police, in partnership with Australian Maritime Safety Authority and NSW Police Marine Area Command, rescued the boat off Mallacoota.
It came after the Irishman and his French partner were rescued 210 nautical miles north-east of Sydney on March 8 when their yacht capsized.
“We just want to say ‘thank you’ Eden for such an amazing welcome,” Mr Dwyer said.
“It’s been absolutely superb.”
Since being reunited with their boat, the sailors have called Eden home while moored at the Eden Wharf.
A Lakes Entrance man who was visiting the area offered the pair some spare sails when he noticed the boat was missing its set.
Another visitor, a mechanic, offered his time to help repair the outboard engine after striking a conversation.
They’ve also received a dingy when one passerby noticed the yacht was missing one, while another sailor offered his mooring at the wharf.
“We’re amazed by the people who are naturally generous, the type of people who take care of one another,” Ms Heftman said.
Even the team at Drift Eden, whom the sailors first met when they arrived in Eden to see their boat, offered the services of a car if needed.
The yacht’s rudder, which broke before the “traumatic” event off Sydney, has since been repaired.
Val still requires some work before being seaworthy, but the duo is confident they will be able to sail to Sydney in due time to meet with members from AMSA to offer their gratitude.
Until then, the couple will continue to embrace what Eden and its surrounds have to offer, as they did by attending the Anzac Day march and service on Tuesday.
“We came from hell to arrive at the Garden of Eden,” Mr Dwyer said.
“But seriously Eden, you rock as a town.”
