Heartfelt thank you to the kind people of Eden
Last week my daughter had a fall outside the Commonwealth Bank, in which she required an ambulance.

I would like to thank everyone who helped, from the strangers in the street that stopped and helped to the ambulance people who were so gentle.
The ladies in the Commonwealth Bank were so lovely as were the ladies at the Great Southern Inn.
It was a distressing time but all the great Eden people made it easier for my husband and I.
Thank you Eden.

Ridiculous red tape
Just when you think The System can't get sillier and more petty it does.
Hot on the heels of the clipboard-wielding killjoys who ordered the snipping of the play rope overhanging the Yowaka – which has provided harmless fun for generations – now we have our council binding the Pointon family with reels of red tape.
As reported in last week's Magnet, the Pointons, helped by members of the Sapphire Coast community, built a sandbag barrier to stop their old and much-lived sheds at Pambula river mouth being washed away in predicted king tide.
Ah no, they are told, this constitutes a wall and you need to lodge a development application accompanied by reports from engineers and environmentalists.
Councils are our paid servants and they are supposed to help us. Instead we hit endless rules and obstacles in so many aspects of our lives. Shame on them.

Generous act
I write to congratulate and acknowledge the work of Peter Hannan in donating reusable drinking bottles to students in the Bega Valley Shire.
This generous and sensible act is a perfect example of the action citizens can take when governments fail to make decisions that are in the best public interest.
It is also a great way to give industries like oil and aluminium the royal finger and say “no we do not want to take the by-products of your processes off your hands to increase your profit margin”.
Bundanoon recently placed a ban on plastic bottles in their area, Mallacoota declares it is plastic bag free.
I commend Peter in his actions and hope that the rest of the Bega Valley Shire can use their power at the checkout to avoid plastic and fluoride.

Water filtration is ‘basic’
The Bega Valley Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association has written to the Shadow Minister for Health, Walt Secord MLC, thanking him for his public call to the NSW Government to provide funding for the installation of a water filtration system to the Brogo-Bermagui water supply service in the Bega Valley.
While the BVSRRA is grateful for Mr Secord’s efforts on behalf of the residents of the Bega Valley, it has highlighted the fact the Bega Valley Shire has four separate water supply systems, namely the Brogo-Bermagui, Tantawangalo-Kiah, Bega-Tathra and Bemboka systems.
None of which have the benefit of water filtration systems.
Indeed, the BVSRRA understands that the water systems in the Bega Valley are the only systems in NSW that do not have filtration systems installed.
The BVSRRA acknowledges that the state government has committed funding to allow for the installation of a water filtration system on the Bemboka water supply system.
However, it has asked Mr Secord to pressure the government to take steps to install water filtration systems to all four water supply systems, notwithstanding the significant capital cost involved.
