Police and emergency services rushed to the scene around 2.30pm on Wednesday, March 29.
At least five ambulances, two Fire and Rescue NSW vehicles, Police, the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW hazmat personnel attended the scene.
Emergency crews stabilised one of the vehicles and used cutting equipment to remove a door.
A 38-year-old man with a head injury and in the other vehicle a 42-year-old female with chest and abdominal injuries were extricated from their respective vehicles. Paramedics said both patients were in a stable condition and would be taken to South East Regional Hospital.
However an emergency helicopter was tasked to Merimbula Airport to enable transfer to another hospital.
The highway was blocked in both directions and vehicles were stopped while emergency services dealt with the situation.
