The Mallacoota Boardriders Club is planning its second annual ‘Far Easter’ event from April 7-9, which includes something for everyone – surf enthusiasts and land lubbers alike.
“The ocean is such a big part of life here,” said Glen Warren, president of the Mallacoota Boardriders Club.
“It’s important to celebrate it – it’s what makes life here so special.”
And celebrate it they will! The weekend is scheduled to kick off with recent Triple J unearthed discovery, Southern Soulstice from Bairnsdale, playing a few funk, reggae, and blues infused hip hop sets at the Mallacoota Hotel on Friday evening.
Saturday morning begins with the weekend’s main event – the retro team surf contest – where teams from Far South Coast NSW and Victoria battle it out on retro boards to be crowned inaugural comp champions.
Individuals not competing the contest are still urged to take part in the morning’s Expression Session. With fancy dress encouraged, points will be given for style and stoke. It promises to be an amusing and entertaining morning for all down at Bastion Beach.
Presentations for the winners will be held at the Mallacoota Hotel that evening. Directly following the presentations, local Orbost brewery Sailors Grave will be launching a new beer – Sou’East Draught, inspired in part by the treacherous waters off Cape Conran. The gang at Sailors Grave will be featuring the high energy Melbourne folk band, The Scrims, for an evening of craft beer and foot stomping music at the pub.
The fun doesn’t stop there, with Sunday morning back at Bastion Beach for a chance to meet local shapers from Mallacoota all the way up to Ulladulla.
Mick Mackie of Mackie Surfboards, Luke McKill of McKill Surfboards, Josh Keogh, Bushrat, Glen Warren and Jade Nolan of Seawood Timber surfboards, and Brett Menke of Next Wave surfboards will be on hand to answer questions and exhibit their creations, while you take their boards out for a spin in the waves.
It’s important to celebrate it [the ocean] – it’s what makes life here so special.
- Glen Warren, Mallacoota Boardriders Club
Sunday afternoon moves to Bastion Point Rd. where Brett Menke and Glen Warren will be holding an interactive shaping exhibition. The audience will be in charge, deciding the various specifications to a board that will be shaped in real time, on site for all to watch. If you’ve ever been curious about how and why a board is shaped the way it is, then this event is a must see.
The final event of the weekend is the Board-Short Film Fest at the outdoor stage at the Mudbrick Pavillion. Bring your rug and picnic basket to settle in for a family friendly night of local ocean inspired short films, followed by our feature, Almost Cut My Hair, by experimental board shaper, Ryan Lovelace.
The Far Easter is a grassroots festival run entirely by the stoke of volunteers and groups rallying the community together in our common love of wave riding in our own little piece of paradise.
Everyone is invited to join in the festivities with dates and times posted on our website at www.thefareaster.com.
