“It’s really beautiful down here,” Dr Ajesh Shrestha said.
“I was using Google Maps to search rural areas and Eden came up as a really nice place.”
The former Sydney-sider made the journey south at the start of the year to take a general practitioner position at Eden’s Curalo Medical Clinic.
Dr Shrestha is completing his first term as a GP registrar after completing his residency at Sydney’s Concord Repatriation General Hospital.
“Friends who have gone into GP training before me gave good reviews of rural practices,” he said.
“Everyone’s been really supportive, especially staff at the practice here.”
Dr Shrestha boasts a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and a Bachelor of Medical Science from The University of Sydney.
His postgraduate degree was tied to a Bonded Medical Place Scheme that provides more doctors to areas experiencing professional shortages.
But it is not just the scheme that brought Dr Shrestha to the coast.
“I like being next to the beach. It’s a good change from the busy lifestyle of Sydney, especially the traffic,” he said.
“I also like hiking and landscape photography, so it’s a great place to explore those hobbies too.”
Dr Shrestha moved to Australia from Nepal as a 14-year-old.
He became interested in biology at secondary school before entering medical science, but it was his year working in pathology after completing his undergraduate degree that truly sparked his interest in medicine.
“I really enjoyed the anatomy and physiology aspects, so it made the choice easier,” Dr Shrestha said.
“I’ve also spent some extra time specialising in different areas during my senior residency, especially dermatology, so that could be something I explore in the future.”
It is not just medicine and photography that interest Dr Shrestha. He is also talented at drawing, especially graphite drawings.
