The full-day seminar this Saturday, February 25, has been organised jointly by South Coast History Society and the University of Wollongong in Bega and has attracted an amazing array of top-rate speakers according to South Coast History Society’s Peter Lacey.
“Professor Mark McKenna, who recently wrote about the first non-Indigenous overlanders who passed though the local area, is travelling down from Sydney University and Dr Glenn Mitchell who is senior lecturer in history at the University of Wollongong is providing one of the keynote talks about the importance of South Coast history,” Mr Lacey said.
“Founder of the Gulaga Dancers Warren Foster Sr has agreed to provide an Aboriginal perspective to the day.”
Other exciting presenters include award-winning history author John Blay talking about ‘Lacing on your boots to record history’, and novelist Olga Walker on ways history can become fiction and vice versa.
Fiona Firth from Brogo will reveal some of her discoveries about the impact “alternative lifestylers” who moved to the South Coast in the 1970s and 1980s have had on the area.
Peter Alexander will recount some of the challenges that have been faced by the Bega and Cobargo Veterinary Clinics which has provided a continuous service to the local community since the early 1950s.
Leith Davis will discuss history of the South Coast timber industry, and UoW Bega history tutor Jodie Stewart will be talking about various aspects of South Coast history including the historical significance of the Bundian Way.
“I’d be very surprised if anyone goes away not having learned a lot about the area’s local history,” Mr Lacey said.
“Potentially we will also have some extremely interesting contributions from many of these attendees at the symposium.”
