“Teams are filing in for the Australia Day Cricket Challenge with plenty of teams already lodged,” Mudaliar said.
“The Backyarders have signed up to defend the Owen Alan Trophy and it will not be handed over easily.”
A good number of the sides have already been filled with a great initial response from juniors a highlight so far.
Mudaliar said the day was open to everyone and used modified rules, with men, women, young and old all invited to join in the fun.
Spectators are also encouraged to head along and cheer on their favourite teams with plenty of food and drink on offer through a number of food vans and a community barbecue to enjoy the day.
Mudaliar said play would run from 10.30am on Australia Day and anyone interested in putting in a team should call him on 0429 906 362.
The Australia Day Challenge will also signal the start of big new things for the Eden Cricket Club, named a recipient of a CommBank partnership.
The club is set to receive a boost in funding through a CommBank sponsorship announced yesterday.
Members of the cricket club will formally establish a two-year partnership with CommBank, which includes financial funding, as well as much-needed cricket gear and merchandise.
The program provides clubs with two years of funding worth $2000 each year, along with new equipment for training and matches.
Matt Jorgensen, branch manager of Commonwealth Bank Eden, said CommBank was delighted to lend its support to Eden Cricket Club.
“It’s great to be able to help Eden Cricket Club because we know they do an excellent job in supporting local cricketers,” Mr Jorgensen said. “They are clearly very worthy recipients of our sponsorship and we’re thrilled to have established a partnership with them.”
Australian captain Steve Smith said he also valued the program.
“Boys, girls, men and women across the country are able to get together with friends and play the game they love because of the hard work and dedication of Australia’s local cricket clubs,” Smith said.
“CommBank’s support of local clubs is one of Australian cricket’s longest-standing and most important.”
In regular season play, the Eden side took an unfortunate loss to the ladder-leading Merimbula Knights on Saturday.
The Knights were typically slow and steady with the bat where Ash Postance shone with a team best of 42 runs.
The Knights finished the innings on 5-162, but Eden couldn’t match the visitors with the bat.
Mark Spink was the standout with 44 runs, while the order collapsed to finish all out on 99.
On Saturday, Eden plays Tuross at Tuross from 1pm.
