For the first time in many years almost all of the Eden Marine Rescue volunteers came together and celebrated the hard work and dedication of a few key members.
Eden’s Marine Rescue wouldn’t be the same without the tireless efforts of Jenny Drenkhahn, Ian Whiter, John Steal and Jan and John Aveyard.
Brother and sister duo Ms Drenkhahn and Mr Whiter were presented with National Medals for their lengthy and diligent service to the Eden community.
To receive a National Medal a person must have served an eligible organisation for at least 15 years, and the chief officer of the organisation must assess their service as "diligent". But Ms Denkhahn and Mr Whiter have served for more than 15 years, they’ve served for 30.
Without their generous family the Eden Marine Rescue may never have existed as it was their mother Jean Whiter who started up the Coastal Patrol on her back verandah in the early 1980s.
“Mum loved the coastal patrol and Marine Rescue, we have just been continuing what she started,” Ms Drenkhahn said.
They were also presented with a clasp, which is awarded for each additional period of 10 years service.
Eden unit commander John McKinnon said it was time for their volunteers to be formally recognised.
“But it’s not just our volunteers that need to be thanked and recognised,” Mr McKinnon said. “The families of our volunteers contribute in a huge way. It is the same with every volunteer organisation, people’s whole families get involved and they give and give and give.”
When Ms Drenkhahn, who was the rostering secretary for around 25 years, was presented with her award, she was graciously thanked by fellow recipient John Steal who said “it wouldn’t have run as smoothly without her”.
Mr Steal who previously received a National Medal for his time in the Navy was also presented with clasps to reflect his 25 years at the Marine Rescue.
Mr and Mrs Aveyard, who joined the service together in 1996 were also presented with National Medals.
The presentation of awards took place at the RSL hall and was catered by the Eden Lionesses.
Two Eden Water Police officers joined the celebration and Sergeant Steven Judd thanked the Marine Rescue for all its help over the years.
Before the day was over the retiring regional controller Bob Herbert was also thanked.
“Today we recognised all our members who have worked day in day out and not expected anything in return,” Mr McKinnon said.
