“We were supposed to start Swimming club in Eden a few weeks ago, but it was cancelled due to the water temperature being too cold for children to enjoy their swimming,” a spokeswoman for the club said.
The cold snap has continued and officials said Thursday’s meet would be moved to the Sapphire Aquatic Centre in Pambula.
“It’s still a bit too cold for swimming club so we’ll be heading up the road at 5.45pm for a 6pm start,” the spokeswoman said.
She said unfortunately due to the location change, the club would not be able to offer food on the night and encouraged everyone to pack something to eat.
The club is in the process of raising funds to buy thermal covers for the pool in an effort to maintain the temperature more consistently.
“If 1000 people donated just $10 we would be able to afford to buy and fit the covers,” the spokeswoman said, adding that all donations are appreciated.
Anyone who is able to help out can donate at the Eden IMB branch or can contact the club through the Facebook page.
With the weather set to finally warm up, swim meets will soon return to normal and the club is welcoming returning swimmers and any interested new swimmers.
“We meet each Monday evening at Eden pool commencing at 5.45pm, we offer swimmers of all ages and ability to participate in club activities, in a fun and friendly atmosphere,” the spokeswoman said.
Swimmers are coached and can compete from beginner to advanced in the hopes of improving their own lap times across both 10 and 25 metre events.
Membership for the 2016/17 season is $80 per swimmer or $75 per swimmer if there is more than one member per family.
Non-swimmers are $27 per season. If swimmers are under 18 years of age, they must be accompanied by a non-swimmer financial member.
Children under the age of seven will enjoy free membership this season. Swimmers who would like to try swimming club can do so for two weeks free of charge before becoming a member.
The club also regularly takes part in local carnivals and travelling for state and country competitions.
A group of Eden swimmers recently travelled to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centra to compete in the NSW Achievers squad carnival.
It was a fantastic carnival for the group with all of the swimmers hitting personal best times.
Jack Caldwell claimed a silver in the 50m freestyle, while Kaitlyn Hoare placed 7th in the 50m freestyle for her age group.
“That is a fantastically positive start to our competitive summer season.”
