Presented by the Spectrum Theatre Group and directed by Bruce Waddell, this premiere of a new play by David Burke explores the possibilities.
Set both in modern day and 1942, this mixture of fact and fiction begins with a Sydney journalist travelling to Eden to follow a possible story.
His original interest in abalone divers is then turned, by a chance meeting, into questions about Disaster Bay, midget submarines and attacks on ships along the coast.
The finding of a significant painting in Bega leads him then to follow the story of the artist and events at her “Cottage at Tathra”.
This intriguing mystery play will be presented at Twyford Hall, Merimbula, each Friday and Saturday night (7.30pm) and Sunday afternoons (2pm) from September 9-18.
The play will be prefaced by a short WW2 Revue, featuring the songs and dances of those wartime years.
Cast in the play are Dean Usher, Jodie Meaker, Amber Little, Sam Roberts, Jessica Newell and Elaine Waddell. The Revue is coordinated by Donna Cotter and has a cast of eight.
They are accompanied by the young and highly talented pianist Hunter Bailey-Watts of Nethercote.
Since beginning work on this play, Bruce Waddell has been contacted by numerous local people with anecdotes of sightings and possible shoreline activity around 1942, together with accounts of plans there.
The writer of The Cottage at Tathra David Burke, has a distinguished career in journalism, has written many books and a feature for ABC TV.
Mr Burke, now of Kiama, is looking forward to attending this first-ever production of his play and is delighted that it is taking place in the location of the play – the Far South Coast.
Evening shows ($26) on September 9, 10, 16, 17 start at 7.30pm and are cabaret style; BYO drinks and snacks. Matinee shows ($23) on Sunday September 11, 18 start at 2pm and have theatre-style seating.
