Some of us have excellent memories and, without difficulty can bring to mind the common, or even the scientific, name of a particular example. Others of us might just know it by a very general name.
I had a visit from relatives recently who are avid bird-watchers. We went for a couple of walks in Eden during their visit, and I was greatly enlightened by the “proper” names of some birds, to which I mentally refer in very general terms.
Knowing something more specific than a general reference, shows me that there is a lot more knowledge of the particular bird or plant than just knowing its specific name. I come to understand there could be more detailed understanding of particular characteristics, such as flowering, call, life cycle, etc.
As I considered these thoughts, I was reminded of some verses found in Psalm 139. “Lord, ... You know me. You know everything I do, … You understand all my thoughts ... You see me, whether I’m working or resting; you know all my actions. Your knowledge of me is beyond my understanding.”
Despite all this detailed knowledge, the wonderful message of The Bible is of God’s constant love for each one of us. He wants us to have this attitude of love to Himself, and others.
As Jesus’ close friend John writes in his gospel, “God did not send His Son into the world to be its judge but to be its Saviour.”
What a great message of hope and encouragement. Let’s take every chance to experience it and share it.
