The release was conducted by the Central Cumberland Racing Pigeon Federation, with the pigeons racing 375kms back to their homes in Sydney.
Secretary of the Central Cumberland Racing Pigeon Federation John Jeffery said Saturday’s race was the second of three pigeon races leaving from Eden this month.
The first was on Saturday July 16 and the third will be this Saturday July 30, before the start point moves further south to Mallacoota and then all the way down to Launceston, Tasmania.
“We start the races close to Sydney and then gradually get further and further away, making it more challenging for the pigeons,” Mr Jeffery said.
The pigeons were released from the southern end of the cemetery on Eden’s Aslings Beach, witnessed by a “small but enthusiastic crowd” according to Eden resident Brownyn Wright.
“There were approximately 6,500 pigeons, and they were released on the dot of 9.30am,” Ms Wright said on Monday.
“I only saw one lagging behind.
“The shapes of the birds in flight was very interesting.”
