But last Friday July 22 the entire campus of the Eden Marine High School was akin to a bedroom, as students participated in National Pyjama Day.
Teacher Kate Mamone said the day was all about wearing your best bedtime attire for a worthy cause.
“National Pyjama Day helps The Pyjama Foundation raise much-needed awareness and funds for children in foster care,” Ms Mamone said on Monday.
“Our staff and students acknowledge the 43,000 Australian children in foster care, and the raised funds will go towards additional educational support provided by The Pyjama Foundation.”
Founded in 2004 by Bronwyn Sheehan, The Pyjama Foundation is dedicated to making “a positive impact on the lives of our community’s most vulnerable children”, with volunteer Pyjama Angels working one-on-one with foster children to help improve education, self-worth, and future prospects.
Ms Mamone said the high school raised over $500 for the foundation, via gold coin donation and the sale of hot chips.
“This day was selected by the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC) as a focus for term three,” Ms Mamone said.
“The SRC have selected a number of local, state and national focus areas this year to support, including local athlete Dane Waites – who is running from Perth to Pambula to raise awareness for autism – and RUOK? Day, and Bandana Day.”
Ms Mamone – dressed in owl-print pyjamas perfectly complimented by steel-capped boots – said the Pyjama Foundation touched a personal chord at the high school.
“The charity was chosen because we have a few kids at the school in foster care, and we’ve been helped out by a number of foster-care parents,” Ms Mamone said.
Year 12 student Amber McGarrity said it was great to see both staff and students get involved.
“It was a fun and comfortable way to raise money and awareness for the cause,” Amber said.
