Australian design company BVN, have received a commendation for the hospital’s design at the recent NSW Architect Awards in Sydney, and have been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Awards in Berlin later this year.
The architectural brain behind the hospital’s design is the company’s principal, Julian Ashton.
“I am really pleased because it is the only Australian health project to be shortlisted and one of only eight health projects worldwide,” Mr Ashton said.
The hospital will be up against some of the best designed museums and galleries from across the globe, yet Mr Ashton is confident he can impress the judges.
“The judges will look for clarity of design intent and how well that has been completed, client happiness, the design idea and how strongly that has been articulated and ultimately resolved and also anything that’s been done in a different way, in an innovative way,” he said.
“The presentation really has to make them go ‘wow’.”
The hospital is one of 343 projects from around the world and Mr Ashton is excited by the opportunity to visit Berlin for the first time.
“Berlin is an amazing city, one of the most dynamic cities in the world,” he said.
Mr Ashton said the awards create an element of ‘creative respect’ in a competitive industry, with the hospital designed to be sensitive to the surrounding landscape.
This design has been based on recent research revealing patients who are able to view nature and gardens have reduced levels of pain.
The space has been designed so that every patient in the hospital has a view towards nature, with lush green pastures and mountains visible from almost every angle.
Chief Executive of the Southern NSW Local Health District, Janet Compton, congratulated the BVN team of Mr Ashton, Stephanie Costelloe, Ian Goodbury, Stella De Vulder, Debbie Nichols, Peter Titmuss and Phillip Rossington.
“BVN have designed a future proofed hospital we are all very proud of,” she said.
