The Eden VIEW Club is holding a Christmas in July fun day on Monday, July 25, at The Great Southern Inn (Essentially Eden) 12 for 12.30pm.
The cost is $30 with many beautiful prizes including a scrumptious Christmas Hamper.
Any donations made will support "The Smith Family" Learning for Life program, so grab your friends and get a table together.
For more details or to book contact Aileen on 6496 1920 by July 19.
The Eden VIEW Club holds regular meetings every fourth Monday of the month.
The club’s social activities include guest speakers, annual events such as the Christmas in July this year and many varied outings to share the joy of friendship.
With the money raised throughout the year they are able to support three Learning for Life children who benefit greatly in their learning environments.
It is very satisfying and enjoyable on hearing about their education journey and achievements.
The members are also active participants in "The Smith Family' Toy and Book appeal, delivering toys and books at Christmas time. The group enjoys promoting the work of 'The Smith Family' by assisting in the breaky club at Eden school.
This club is looking for new members, new ideas and new friends who may like to support them in their great work.
Come and meet us at the Christmas in July event or pop in to say hi and to introduce yourself to let us know how you may be able to help.
ATO scam
Eden locals have contacted the Magnet and asked us to warn residents of a number of scam phone calls that seem to be doing the rounds.
Scammers are falsely claiming to be from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) or Australian Tax Office (ATO).
Scammers are telling residents that there is a warrant out for their arrest or that they will be arrested if they do not pay a fine.
They typically ask for money to be sent via wire transfer as it’s nearly impossible to recover money sent this way.
Be on guard, if you receive a phone call from someone saying you have an arrest warrant and asking you to pay a fee, hang up and do not respond.

SAPPHIRE SQUARES
The local square-dance club, Sapphire Squares Merimbula, has been running now for 26 years. They have, for many years, danced on a Wednesday evening at the Uniting Church Hall, Merimbula. As from this week they are moving their weekly dances to Fridays from 1.30 to 4pm, still at the Uniting Church Hall.
They would love to have some new members join their happy group, and all are very welcome. Why not pop in and have a look sometime, maybe join us for a cup of tea? It is a lot of fun. George teaches the dance moves from the very beginning, so no previous experience is necessary. Either ring 64952734, or just turn up.
Writers’ retreat
The Writers of the Far South Coast are once again holding a writers retreat.
The Writers’ Retreat for 2016 is set for the frist weekend in August from Friday 5 until midday Sunday August 7 at Kianniny Resort.
The ticket price of $250 includes accommodation, mentoring sessions, linen, firewood and some meals. You’ll be paired with another writer to share a cabin, but you’ll have your own room. It’ll be chilly… so pack those winter woolies.
On Friday night, we’ll start out with a welcome barbecue at 6:30pm where you will meet the mentors and sign up with whomever you believe will benefit your writing the most. While we enjoy our dinner we will be serenaded by local violinist, Andrew Kordas. You can arrive at Kianinny any time after 3pm to get settled.
Breakfasts will be your responsibility as there are too many dietary requirements to cater for everyone.
Mentoring sessions will be from 9:30am – 11am with the mentor you chose on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, followed by a break for morning tea.
After morning tea on Sunday, we’ll wrap up the weekend with photos and thank our mentors.
All activities are optional. You can stay in your cabin to write and only emerge when you begin to feel peckish.
Firewood will be provided, but you will be required to manage lighting the fireplace yourself. You’ll be provided with instructions, kindling and firestarters.
There is a possibility of WiFi being made available in each cabin.
The resort has many walking tracks, quiet spaces, a pool (brrrr), climbing walls, and mini-golf.
For more information or to book a place contact Writers of the Far South Coast (WFSC) president Amanda Dalziel at writersofthefarsouthcoast@gmail.com.

Oysters in the outback
Five oyster farmers from Merimbula and Pambula Lake have traveled thousands of kilometres into the Australian outback to show off the region’s incredible Sydney Rock Oysters.
The convoy hit the road on June 28 on a journey to the Big Red Bash at Birdsville but stopped in at a pub in Milparinka to impress 80 Queensland farmers with the delicious tastes of the Far South Coast.
They then continued their journey across inland Australia, arriving in Alice Springs on Tuesday, July 12.
Sue McIntyre from Broadwater Oysters said they had planned to bring 6000 oysters with them on the journey but unfortunately due to rain they were unable to do so.
“We have taken this as a bit of a test run to see if it is something we want to repeat again in the future,” Ms McIntyre said.
Ms McIntyre said a highlight of the trip was talking to other farmers.
“The farmers we have met up here have been amazed to have such fresh seafood travel all the way from the Far South Coast of NSW.”
