It’s where they go to find solitude, a place to fulfill man’s primal urge to build and collect. Some use it to hide; others use it to share with mates. 

The shed has been the bastion of man for generations. But over time a new concept has grown, rather than being alone in one’s own shed, communal areas have been created for men to come together, to bond, build and to fight isolation and loneliness. 

These places are known as Men’s Sheds and now there is a push for one to be created in Pambula. 

A group of Pambula men held a meeting in December to discuss the possibility of a Pambula Men’s Shed. They have identified a few possible sites and are now are wanting to garner interest from the community. 

A public meeting for all interested parties to discuss the idea is to be held on Monday, July 18 at the Pambula Merimbula Golf Club at 5pm in the Garden Room. 

Pambula Men’s Shed interim committee member Daryl Dobson said he believes a Men’s shed could have a positive impact on the town. 

“I think there’s a lot of lonely men out there that could benefit from a Men’s Shed,” he said. 

“Firstly we want to see the Men’s Shed get up and running but, there are other things we would like to see which could include a mentoring program with young boys and girls.”

A number of local men have said they have equipment and wood they would happily donate to the shed and the Rotary Club of Pambula has pledged some money to help pay for the initial costs such as becoming incorporated. 

One of the organisers Jill Hambling said the main thing they want to discuss at the upcoming public meeting is how local men would like to use the shed. 

“Do they want a fully functioning workshop, or just a place to get together and have a chat and play chess? We want the shed to reflect what men want and need,” Ms Hambling said. 

“People have been talking about a Pambula Men’s Shed for years and we are now getting some momentum.
