The Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club’s 24th Broadbill and 4th annual Blue Fin Tournament closed last Sunday evening with a well attended presentation.

While no broadbill were landed overall, three were hooked and lost, a testimony to its spectacular fighting ability.
Top prize went to Trevor Chippendale of Sea Hog for his 47kg yellowfin tuna and the prize for heaviest other game fish to Geoff McMahon in the same boat for his 44kg yellowfin tuna.
Glenn Pollock of Reel Jem took out the prize for the most tag and release sharks and Andrew Grimes the prize for the heaviest shark, a 102.5kg mako from the same boat.
Next year the event will be run in July (7-9 and 14-16) when the seas are expected to be calmer.
Intrepid anglers fishing the rocks along Long Point took a number of very large drummer – to 47cm – during the week of the Jazz Festival – perhaps there is a link?
Drummer favour cunjevoi and are taken using a float line.
Catches of squid as well as salmon and tailor including the occasional kingfish maintain interest for local and visiting anglers from the Merimbula Fishing Platform.
Reports from offshore bottom bouncers are few and far between but we understand ocean flathead are back on the bite off Tura Beach and Bournda and northwards all the way to Tathra, try 20 fathoms.
Morwong remain along the reef edges together with snapper.
Gummy sharks are active during the full moon.
With the seas moderating, catches of salmon using spinners from the beaches were reported, including Tura and Tura North.
Not a lot to report from the estuaries apart from congratulations to Avon Rollason for her great catch and release dusky flathead of 85.5cm from the Bega River.
A couple of catch and release bream and dusky flathead were reported from Merimbula Lake although with temperatures dropping.
The club maintains an open house at Spencer Park every Friday evening commencing at 6.30 pm. Visitors are welcome, come and enjoy the fishing report, the ambience, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices.
