It is likely this tournament will attract a record showing as anglers fish our local offshore canyons where broadbill are expected to congregate during daylight hours.
Members said this had been widely regarded as “secret” to fish for the coveted species during the daylight hours.
However, the club was learning to adapt the feature event after picking up techniques similar to those used by American big game anglers as daytime fishing techniques became widely publicised.
This tournament will also be the first time anglers are permitted by NSWGFA to use braided fishing line for broadbill.
Traditional mono lines will be required for bluefin tuna anglers, but there is still expected to be plenty of interest in this class with some massive catches recorded off the Far South Coast.
In regular fishing news Ocean flathead, both sand and tiger, together with gummy shark remain on the bite off Pinnacles, Tura Beach and Bournda and northwards all the way to Tathra – try 20 fathoms.
This is the prime snapper season and good results are reported from all off Long Point, Hunter Reef, Haycock, Horshoe Reef, Lennards Island and South Head at Eden.
Morwong remain along the reef edges together with snapper. Anchoring with burley suits windy weather and on the calmer days drifting with soft plastic brings great results.
In the estuaries Bream are available where they can seek cover such as oyster racks and treed edges. Defiantly a job for soft plastics and vibes.
In Merimbula Lake Tailor are plentiful.
Dusky Flathead and whiting are still about as water temps have not dropped rapidly but with winter now here they will become harder to find.
All estuary fish respond well to soft plastics and also live nippers and baitfish metal lures bring good results. At the Merimbula Fishing platform Luderick anglers have packed their gear up until November.
Catches of Squid as well as Salmon and Tailor including the occasional Kingfish maintain interest for local and visiting anglers.
The club maintains an Open House at Spencer Park, every Friday evening starting at 6.30pm.
Members and visitors are welcome so take along the family and friends to enjoy the fishing report, the ambience, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices.
