After checking conditions, officials made the decision to host the surf at Merimbula’s Short Point that took best advantage of the surf on the day.
“The weather was perfect with a small swell that everyone enjoyed and it proved to be a great opportunity for the 80-plus competitors to get out amongst the waves and compete,” club president Craig Ryan said.
Ryan said the community had come together to host the day with volunteers helping out on every level.
“Local yoga teacher Jacinda from Pure Body Fitness and surf coach Luke Wuiske donated their time and experience holding classes on the day and spectators and local parents also helped with the judging and barbecue,” Ryan said.
The returned club is booming in popularity as membership has ballooned to 155 and growing. “It provied to be a really strong and positive club to be a part of within the local community,” Ryan said.
A number of prizes were donated by local businesses and presented to entrants as encouragement for their efforts.
Best junior girl was Arabella Tarpey, senior woman went to Tiffany Drake.
The best junior boy was Levi Carter and senior boy Tevour Coombes.
Encouragement awards went to Kate Mamone and Roy Buckingham.
Officials thanked donators Wild Rye, Pambula Bottle-o, Merimbula Surf Shop, Pambula Pizza, Tarryn Lucas Fitness and Magic Mountain.
The club’s next competition day is June 25.
