The Eden resident was presented with his medal alongside 58 other high achieving Australians in a ceremony at Government House in Canberra on Friday afternoon, April 15.
As he made his way to the stage, to accept his award from the Governor General Peter Cosgrove, the crowd heard the ways in which he has served the Bega Valley Shire community.
“It’s funny because I thought the Governor General would want to talk to me about all my time with Rotary but instead we spoke about my time with the coast patrol,” Mr Jarvis said.
Mr Jarvis has dedicated 53 years of his 88 years of life to serving Rotary, acting as president for both the Rotary Club of Cobram in 1970/71 and the Rotary Club of Eden in 1988/89.
He has lived in Eden since 1986 and during this time worked as a marine inspector for NSW’s Monaro District State Rescue Board in 1995, and volunteered for the Eden Volunteer Coastal Patrol (now Eden Marine Rescue) as radio operator and member from 1987 to 2008.
Clare McMahon of Pambula Rotary said Mr Jarvis is still the main carer of Eden’s Rotary Park.
“He waters and maintains the garden and organises working bees when needed, Rotary Park wouldn’t be the same without him,” Ms McMahon said.
Mr Jarvis attended the ceremony with his two sons and a granddaughter.
Daryl Dobson from Pambula also received his OAM.
