Officials from the Eden club said the game was tight throughout with good ball movement between the 50m lines.
Tathra opened the major scoring with the game’s first goal before Eden took a lead in possession, but struggled to find the big posts with its kicking.
Bianca Findlay was dominating around the ground with strong tackling, while Rhiannon Richardson kicked the first goal for the Whalers.
The two women’s sides are shaping as the competition leaders and a sign of the close contest was the two-point margin in favour of Tathra at the main break.
Tyler Crowe was all over the ball working well at both ends of the ground, while Kamilla Grubesic was dominant in the forward lines and put a number of shots at the posts to land a major in the fourth quarter.
Tammy Whitford was also a strong force for the visitors, while best for Tathra were Tarni Evans and Tyjana Thelan, who were integral in working the play through the midfield and kicking goals for the hosts.
Despite an immensely close match, the Sea Eagles found a late goal to take the game by a nine-point margin 28-19.
Eden officials said it was a high standard of play and congratulated everyone who took part and commended players’ player Hayley Spink.
After the women’s match the ladies and both men’s teams lined up for a minute’s silence and the last post as a commemoration of the Anzac weekend.
Unfortunately, after the formalities the day turned south quickly for the Whalers. Strong early defense held Tathra out for a time before the scoring floodgates opened. “We were swimming against the tide,” a spokesman said.
James Timms worked hard in the ruck against two larger bodies from Tathra, while Pete Russell made good use of the ball when he had possession.
The Sea Eagles led by 40 at the first quarter, but had blown out the lead to 100 by the main break.
Liam Wilkinson added two goals for the Whalers, but it did little to dent the big score difference on the day.
“The Whalers also said goodbye to Toby who is off overseas after playing with the club for 10 years,” the spokesman said. “He will be missed in the backline.”
Bega-Tathra took the game 34-23 (227) to 2-4 (16).
The spokesman said poor numbers were starting to impact the club. “We hope to see more players at training on Tuesdays an Thursdays,” he said.
“The women’s numbers have been strong, but more men are needed.” Junior training is from 5pm with seniors pulling on the boots at 5.30pm.
This weeks game is at home and will feature the unfurling of last years Premiership Flag. The Juniors start at 11:15 and the seniors at 2:30
