Mallacoota P-12 College have been in the recording studio and on the beaches at sunrise to prepare an original song and film clip for the CREATivE CHANGE GenerationOne School Competition, a movement to end the disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children in one generation.
Children in Years 4 to 9 have been working with Mallacoota writer, editor and anthologist Bruce Pascoe to incorporate Aboriginal words from the Monaro and Bidwell-Maap languages into their song.
There are three vocalists and musicians who play sax, bass, guitar, drums and keyboard.
The community is right behind them with visits from a guest speaker who has spent many years working in remote Aboriginal communities and Indigenous park rangers.
Coordinator Lisa Broome said the competition is a great opportunity for the children to get creative and make a statement about their world.
“It is based around the theme of equal opportunity for all Australians and trying to reduce the disparity between Indigenous and white Australians,” she said.
“The singers came up with the lyrics and the instrumentalists came up with the music.
“I was nearly in tears the other day when we properly recorded the song, the children were a bit nervous and had to do it one track at a time and when they listened back to the rough mix they got so excited.”
The competition is open to all Australian schools and has a $15,000 place prize.
